In a world where acceptance and understanding are paramount, the need for advocacy and support for the LGBT+ community remains as crucial as ever. For over two decades, I’ve dedicated my career to championing this cause, striving to create a more inclusive and compassionate society. My journey has been one of passion, challenges, and ultimately, meaningful impact.
My foray into the charity sector began over 30 years ago, driven by a deep-seated commitment to advancing LGBT+ inclusion. Recognising the glaring lack of resources and support for individuals within the community, I embarked on a mission to make a difference. This led to the founding of Support U, a pioneering organisation aimed at providing essential assistance to those in need.
At Support U, we implemented a range of services tailored to address the diverse needs of the LGBT+ community. From one-on-one support sessions covering topics like coming out and workplace challenges to counseling and befriending programs, our goal has always been to offer a safe and welcoming space for individuals to seek guidance and support.
In addition to direct support services, education and advocacy have been cornerstones of our work at Support U. Recognising the importance of raising awareness and fostering understanding, I developed comprehensive training programs on LGBT+ issues. These initiatives encompass everything from LGBT+ history to the challenges faced by individuals in various professional settings.
The training efforts have extended beyond the organisation, reaching diverse audiences including healthcare professionals, educators, social workers, and more. By equipping these individuals and institutions with the knowledge and tools to better support the LGBT+ community, I worked towards creating a more inclusive and affirming environment across sectors.
Beyond my role at Support U, my career has been marked by a diverse array of experiences spanning the advertising, marketing, and charity sectors. From managing stakeholders and budgets to negotiating new business agreements and overseeing multi-project workflows, I’ve honed a versatile skill set that has proven invaluable in advancing the causes I’m passionate about.
Moreover, my commitment to continuous learning and personal development has led me to pursue certifications like Prince 2 and training in mental health first aid. These qualifications have equipped me with the tools to not only effectively manage projects and resources but also provide vital support to those experiencing mental health challenges within the LGBT+ community.
As I embark on my next endeavor as a social entrepreneur, I carry with me the lessons learned and experiences gained over the past three decades. While the journey has been filled with its share of obstacles, the impact I’ve been able to make – sometimes, one individual at a time – serves as a testament to the power of advocacy and compassion.
Looking ahead, my commitment to advancing LGBT+ inclusion remains unwavering. Whether through direct support services, education, or advocacy, I am dedicated to continuing the fight for a more inclusive and accepting world. Together, we can build a future where every individual – regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity – feels seen, valued, and embraced for who they are.
